I’ve been using Flickr.com to externally share photos since March 2005 (just before the Yahoo acquisition), and I have some 40.000 photos there from the past two decades.
Pixelfed a federated photo sharing tool is meant as a Instagram alternative. I created a test account on Pixelfed.social in December 2018 (profile number 4000) but never used it for anything.
More recently Pixelfed has enjoyed wider attention and has been a top download on mobile phones.
I wonder, would Pixelfed be suitable as a Flickr replacement? Does anyone treat is as such yet?
A quick exploration of the settings seems to indicate I can’t, like in Flickr, share images with specific circles of contacts (e.g. designated family for pictures that have our daughter in it), or choose to not share them at all other than with myself. Uploads are limited to 20 images at a time, I saw, although albums (on Pixelfed connections) are possible. There also doesn’t (yet?) seem to be a way to explore an image exif or other meta-data, like location.
I’m tempted to self-host a personal instance to experiment. Anyone with experience in that?
@ton @pixelfed Not yet. I don’t know if I could, I have 43,000 photos on Flickr.
@Downes @pixelfed yeah, I have just under 40k there too.
@ton @pixelfed Recently, @dansup said he was considering a hosting service. I’m waiting for that, but I’m curious to hear about your experience.
@ton not an answer to your question 🙂 but maybe check out https://vernissage.photos/home as well.

@ton I see it more like a replacement for Instagram than for Flickr. Functionality is very different.
@ton Why not use an image CDN like imagekit.io?
@fabiobruna @pixelfed er is nu een yunohost versie voor pixelfed, dat scheelt denk ik, iig voor mij. Ik run bijvoorbeeld ook mastodon op een vos bij hetzner waar ik yunohost op draai
I *think* something like Immich or Photoprism might actually be closer to Flickr than Pixelfed is.
@ton @pixelfed It looks more like an alternative to Instagram than FIickr to me. But (as often is the case) the hardest part to be an alternative to Instagram is the getting the community to adopt it.
@ton Hi, Ton, I have also been using Flickr since 2005. Still enjoy it just as much as the 1st day. However, just in case it may decide to go through the #Enshittification route at some point, I recently created a Pixelfed account as well. Not too sure it will replace Flickr, but if it goes southways, I am ready heh
enshittification
I hear great stories about Immich – I’m not sure how well it would work for ‘public’ photo hosting – but for private photo hosting it’s by far the recommended option it seems
