Observer by Robert Lanza and Nancy Kress

A multiverse novel but different. Starting from the biological basis of consciousness and the primacy of the conscious observer in making reality. Likable story, but rather flat charactered and one part that was a verbatim repeat of an earlier section which I found odd.

About

Blog Interdependent Thoughts maintained since 2002 by Ton Zijlstra.
European citizen in a networked world. Based in the Netherlands, living in Europe, working globally. There are no Others. There is just me and many of you.

I write about how our digital and networked world changes how we work, learn, decide and organize. I explore the tools and strategies that help us navigate the networked world. I am passionate about increasing people's ability to act (knowledge), and their ability to change (learning). Key-words: open data, open government, fablabs, making, complexity, networked agency, networked learning, ethics by design.

    • Hypertexts Reinvented as Roam Books and Roam Newsletters Publishing a book in Roam, and/or a newsletter. I see the appeal and novelty, and the low friction step to process into your own PKM notes. But on the other hand, it's just hypertext sent out as a json blob.
    • Designing for Cognitive Bias I’m participating in the IndieWebCamp East 2020. It’s nominally held on the US East Coast, but as everything else, it’s online. The 6 hr time difference makes it doable to take in at least part of it. The first introductory talk today was by David Dylan Thomas, which I thoroughly enjoyed. He’s a content strategist, […]

    • Vendor Lock In Through Your Domain Name Bookmarked Breaking: Private Equity company acquires .Org registry – Domain Name Wire | Domain Name News This is a somewhat worrying development: the entire .org registry of domain names has been sold to a private equity investor. That basically spells out just one way forward, extraction and rent-seeking. As this step immediately follows from ICANN […]

    • Read.io: Podcasting service (closed beta) From Felix Petersen (one of the originators of Plazes) I got the announcement of a new service he’d like to have beta tested. It’s called Read.io and it takes a RSS feed with text items, and converts them into podcasts. It can do that in different languages. They are working together with the Swedish firm […]

    • Smart Mobs Descending on Umea University Thursday, after a pleasant early morning flight from Stockholm to Umea where Stephanie Hendrick met us at the airport, we enjoyed an afternoon seminar with Howard Rheingold. The seminar was organized by the Humanities Lab (HumLab) of Umea University. The HumLab provided a great space, a cross between a high tech laboratory and welcoming living […]
    • In a Real Democracy the Place of Power is Empty During one of my first philosophy courses we talked about different systems of government, and how they deal with power. Democracy is different from other forms because the place where the power is, is empty. There is no person or object that embodies the power. People just pass through the place of power, objects lose […]
    • Personal Knowledge Management? Workshop at KM Europe We expected around 20 people, we got around 50, around 30 of which joined us for dinner at the Rembrandtplein. Judging by the numbers the PKM? (the question mark indicating the exploratory character) workshop Lilia, Piers and I organized for KnowledgeBoard.com was a success. But as anyone familiar with KM it’s often not the numbers […]
