About

Blog Interdependent Thoughts maintained since 2002 by Ton Zijlstra.
European citizen in a networked world. Based in the Netherlands, living in Europe, working globally. There are no Others. There is just me and many of you.

I write about how our digital and networked world changes how we work, learn, decide and organize. I explore the tools and strategies that help us navigate the networked world. I am passionate about increasing people's ability to act (knowledge), and their ability to change (learning). Key-words: open data, open government, fablabs, making, complexity, networked agency, networked learning, ethics by design.

    • On Reading Feeds #Indieweb Style This is a quick exploration of my current and preferred feed reading patterns. As part of my activities, for Day 2, the hack day, of IndieWebCamp Utrecht. I currently use a stand alone RSS reader, which only consumes RSS feeds. I also experiment with TinyTinyRSS which is a self-hosted feed-grabber and reader. I am attracted […]

    • This Blog Is Now GDPR Compliant At least I think it is…. Personal blogs don’t need to comply with the new European personal data protection regulations (already in force but enforceable from next week May 25th), says Article 2.2.c. However my blog does have a link with my professional activities, as I blog here about professional interests. One of those interests […]

    • Working On Stuff That Matters – WSTM This posting is based on, and an extension of, my opening remarks from last Friday, when my 40th birthday unconference took place. The theme was ‘Working on Stuff that Matters’ What is stuff that matters? The question ‘am I working on stuff that matters?’ has gained more importance slowly but steadily in my life. First […]
    • Looking back on WSTM – General Impressions What a great week it was last week! Looking back, I feel we really celebrated. First on Friday with the unconference ‘Working on Stuff that Matters’, and then the BBQ party on Saturday. My head is still spinning from everything that took place. I will try and word some of my impressions and take-aways in […]

    • Hate Mailers Unmasked by Context Collapse Tinkebell is the nome de plume of Katinka Simonse – van Bruggen, a Dutch artist (or discussion designer as she calls herself). In her work she is deliberately confronting the audience with inconsistencies in their morals and behaviour. A lot of her projects deal with our attitude with animals. At one point she bought 60 […]

    • No Man Should Want To Be An Island (Of Information) Jeffry Phillips in his recent posting ‘All men are islands (of information)‘ talks about how in an organisation individuals hoarding information and not contributing their knowledge to collective action become a bigger obstacle when organisations do more work with less people. This means the sphere of influence of individuals in organisations increases. And asks: What […]
