Everyman

Everyman

This book was released in the Netherlands first, before being released in the US, where writer Philip Roth lives and works. The reason being the reference in the title to Elckerlijc, a late 15th century Dutch play about Elckerlijc (Everyman) reviewing his life before Death gets him. (something all US reviews of the book seem to miss) Philip Roth recreates this story as an allegoric novel describing the inner world of an ordinary American man with an ordinary American life, dying an ordinary death. Working our way backwards from the funeral, the story is at the same time utterly normal and uneventfull as well as compelling, engaging and with a hint of suspense. Memento mori!

(our friend JJ Merelo read it too)
